Cranio-Sacral Therapy

WHAT IS CRANIO-SACRAL THERAPY, HOW DOES IT WORK?

TreeCranio-Sacral Therapy is a very gentle yet profound form of hands-on treatment that is very effective in healing a wide range of physical and emotional conditions. The principles of cranio-sacral therapy were first recognised over a 100 years ago through the research of an American osteopath named Dr William Sutherland.

His research discovered that every cell in the body expresses its own rhythmic motion, that the cranial bones have their own intrinsic movement, and that the cerebro-spinal fluid that serves to cushion and support the brain and spine also has its own rhythmic motion. This is now more commonly known as the cranio-sacral motion and this is expressed throughout the whole body.

In response to everyday physical knocks, bumps and emotional stress the body's tissues contract and tighten up. Every accident and traumatic event is associated with some degree of shock and this can manifest itself in the body and cause further tensions and restrictions in the body. If not addressed, these stresses, strains and tensions can accumulate and cause physical and/or emotional symptoms such as back pain, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, stress and anxiety.

Restrictions in the body affect the flow and rhythmic motion of the cells, bones and fluids. By very subtle palpation, trained therapists can detect this motion and determine its strength and health; as a result can identify restrictions in the body that need releasing to restore vitality.

Catherine Williams (BSC Hons) MCSP SRP RCST

Catherine WilliamsCatherine is a registered Cranio-Sacral Therapist, a Physiotherapist, and is a tutor at the London College of Cranio-Sacral Therapy.  She is also qualified in acupuncture for pain relief and a member of the Craniosacral Therapy Association, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and Acupuncture Association for Chartered Physiotherapists.

Catherine has always had an interest in health and helping people. After graduating in Physiotherapy from Sheffield Hallam University in 1995, Catherine worked in various specialities both in the NHS and private practice. Catherine gained vast experience in treating a wide variety of conditions but, despite the satisfaction that Catherine got from helping her clients, she felt there was something missing from her work.
After a two year career break in which she travelling extensively throughout India and South East Asia, Catherine began to see health and wellbeing more holistically and the importance of physical, mental and spiritual vitality.
As a result of this awareness Catherine decided to train as a Cranio Sacral Therapist under the tuition of Thomas Attlee at the College of Cranio Sacral Therapy, London. To Catherine, this was the missing piece of the jigsaw and this enabled her to use her physiotherapy background of anatomy and physiology to treat clients on one level but also permitted a more holistic approach to healing allowing both emotional and physical imbalances to be met thought initiative touch.

She enjoys yoga, music and rock climbing and loves getting out into the green countryside far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. She has assisted in various voluntary projects in Ghana and enjoys travelling.
